Transforming Science for Global Good

About Us

Origins

Our story began as a grassroots movement in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), and we are now expanding our mission worldwide. We were born out of a desire to enable science to better serve global needs.

Community

We are building an international network of young and old spanning interdisciplinary science and policy, to collectively set the stage for a positive, impactful, and enduring chapter in the progress of science.

Global Vision

Though our roots are in Europe, our network spans continents. As we grow, we’re continually seeking collaborations, ensuring science benefits every corner of our global society long into the future. Science is global.

Mission

Our mission is to enable science to better serve global needs. Our approach targets the very heart of science, from the choices of science funders to individual researchers, empowering scientists to pursue their most impactful science.

Promoting and Optimizing Impact-Driven Science

Little has fueled human progress as much as science. It is due to the immense power of science and the resulting pace of change in our world, however, that we must continually ask how science can evolve and mature to better serve our values, mitigate risks, and provide for our future.

Despite its immense track record, science is a largely fragmented system spread across nations and disciplines. It’s rife with inefficiencies (e.g. duplication of efforts, publication bias, and replicability crises) while the distribution of resources in science poorly reflects common ethical goals. Globalization, open science, and developments in the interface of economics and ethics have presented unique opportunities to optimize the pursuit of knowledge for the global good.

At PROMETHEUS, we strive to promote and optimize impact-driven science. We’re dedicated to fostering an international community striving for science that better meets the needs of society. Join our movement for a better, more ethical future in science.

Our Top Priorities

Science is an unparalleled public resource for global good, with > $1 trillion dollars in annual funding and a large share of the world’s technical expertise. As science’s impact is global and long-term, it is best positioned to serve society’s long-term needs and ethical goals, benefitting generations far into the future.

Guided by impact-driven science, we aim to:

  • Build and coordinate an international community of scientists, science policymakers, and moral philosophers in pursuit of impact-driven science
  • Identify quantifiable standards to guide research directions toward impact for both basic and applied sciences
  • Identify imbalances in the distribution of resources between research topics against these standards
  • Explore mechanisms of science funding and coordination that could better enable impact-driven science
  • Empower scientists to pursue their most impactful science

Get Involved

The world of impact-driven science is vast, with many actors and stakeholders. This complexity should not hold us back but rather encourage us to be cautious, inquisitive, and incremental in pursuit of these ambitious goals. You can play a part in this mission.

We hope that as a community we can set the stage for a positive, impactful, and enduring chapter in the progress of science.
